Collection Description
The collection consists of letters received by Frederick J. "Monte" Monteagle while he was Assistant City Editor of the
Oakland Tribune, Oakland, California. The letters are typewritten, with some having handwritten notes.
They concern the closing years of the Virginia & Truckee Railway, centering on the disposition of Virginia & Truckee records
and artifacts to The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Nevada, Reno, as well
as the animosity between the company's Vice President and General Manager, Gordon A. Sampson, and railroadiana dealer Grahame
Hardy.
The collection contains 38 incoming personal and confidential letters from Sampson, 1950-1953; 2 letters from Virginia & Truckee
president Leslie H. Moore, 1950; and 1 letter from Monteagle. In addition, there are envelopes and 2 clippings. The letters
