Series 2: Prose, 1947-1998

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Arranged chronologically.
Divided into 15 sub-series: Fiction, Non-fiction, Plays, Radio Plays, Short Stories, Movie Scenarios, Essays/Articles, Travel Journals and Notebooks, Notebooks, Lectures/Speeches, Introductions and Afterwords, Translations, Book Reviews, Brochures/Pamphlets, and Clippings. An extensive series illustrating Ferlinghetti's versatility as a writer. Ferlinghetti has published four novels, four works of non-fiction, and the subjects of his articles vary from a discussion of Giacometti sculpture to "A Poet's View of the Super Bowl". Includes Ferlinghetti's first published pieces: book reviews and essays on the San Francisco art scene featured in the San Francisco Chronicle. Ferlinghetti's travel journals and notebooks often contain early drafts of individual poems.
All items included in fiction, non-fiction, plays, radio plays, short stories, movie scenarios, essays/articles, and translations have been indexed under final, variant, and working titles.

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Arranged chronologically or alphabetically, as appropriate.
Divided into 4 sub-series: Royalties, Permissions, and Business Miscellany; Biographical Material; Relating to Works of Lawrence Ferlinghetti; and Poster Collection. Royalties, permissions, and business records are arranged by matter of importance. Biographical material has been further sub-divided into: Interviews, Articles about Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Awards and Tributes, Printed Biographical Information, and Clippings, all arranged chronologically. Relating to Works of Lawrence Ferlinghetti has been further sub-divided into: Poetry Readings, Anthologies, Reviews, Musical Adaptations, Dramatic Interpretations, Translations, Catalogs, and Miscellaneous and Printed Materials. Poetry readings, anthologies, and reviews are arranged chronologically; musical works adapted by Ferlinghetti are listed first, chronologically, followed by works adapted by others, listed alphabetically by title of poem; dramatic interpretations are arranged alphabetically by title. Translations of Ferlinghetti's works are arranged alphabetically by language, and then listed chronologically, by title; catalogs, and miscellaneous and printed materials are arranged alphabetically by title. The poster collection is arranged chronologically, by date of work, in the case of poetry broadsides, or by date of event, as for poetry readings.
Includes a significant range of materials that illustrate Ferlinghetti's professional contributions and artistic affiliations. Interviews, articles about Ferlinghetti, and a chronology of poetry readings spanning 35 years, provide insight to Ferlinghetti's poetic themes and the impact of his work on society in the last half of this century. Musical adaptations, dramatic interpretations, and translations also illustrate Ferlinghetti's broad appeal. Musical and dramatic interpretations span 30 years, with eight languages represented, including Finnish and Yugoslavian. The poster collection, consisting of over 120 items, documents many of Ferlinghetti's public appearances, but also includes broadsides announcing public appearances by Ferlinghetti's friends and members of his artistic circle.
