Scope and Content

William Alvord (1833-1904) was a prominent California businessman, at one time president of the Bank of California, trustee of the College of California, and mayor of San Francisco.
This collection, presented to The Bancroft Library by Mrs. B. H. Skillings in August 1976, consists mainly of letters written to Alvord, many of them letters of introduction or of thanks for hospitality or gifts received. Also included is memorabilia relating to Ulysses S. Grant, 1885, and to President William McKinley in 1901.
