Scope and Contents

The Dial Correspondence is a collection of letters from Francis Fisher Browne, editor of THE DIAL. These letters are essentially personal, but they contain many comments on the affairs of the times. Browne lived in Chicago, had been a soldier in the Union Army, had a large family, and was greatly concerned with the literary, political, and social affairs of his era. He and Melville Best Anderson were close friends and Browne published many of Anderson's reviews, essays and comments on literary subjects.

JOHN HARMANUS VAN VLECK (born 1795, twin brother of Harmanus Van Vleck), Father of John Dorsey Van Vleck, Grandfather of Charlena Van Vleck Anderson. He was a physician in New York state, for a time in New York City. This is an enlargement of a daguerrotype.
HARMANUS VAN VLECK (born 1795, twin brother of John Harmanus Van Vleck). He came to Wisconsin from NEw York state with his family and later (before Civil War) took family to California and settled in Placerville.
