Biography

Frances Marion (Fanny) Ralston was born on Jan. 7, 1875 in St. Louis, MO; studied at the New England Conservatory with Arthur Foote, Percy Goetschius, Fannie Payne, Nellie Strong Stevenson, Richard S. Poppen and Ernest R. Kroeger; also studied under Adolf Weidig in Chicago and under Carl Faelten in Boston; gave a recital of her own compositions at St. Louis in 1896; served as director of the music dept. at Central College, Lexington, MO for two years and of the Music School of Rockford College, IL for nine years; compositions include Sonata Spirituel, Scotch Idyll, Winter, Impressions at Wellesley, Song without Words, and Three Little Waltzes; published Reflections of a Musician (c1920); she died on Feb. 5, 1952 in Arcadia, CA.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of manuscripts, ozalid masters and copies, and published sheet music of musical compositions. Titles include: Orientales for the Piano; Impressions at Wellesley ; Five Tone Poems for Violin, Cello, and Piano; The Awakening; Anthem; The Sea; Sonata no. 2 for Violin and Piano ; Rhapsodie for Piano and Orchestra; and Saul : an Oratorio .
