Scope and Content of Collection
The Office of the Chancellor's Subject Files are an accumulation of records from the Office of Administrative Records. Materials
from different offices are interfiled into subject files, generally in chronological order. Subjects have been assigned numbers
by Administrative Records, and the files have been arranged numerically.
The files include incoming correspondence, copies of some outgoing correspondence, memos, notes, and other materials pertaining
to a given subject. Any matter relating to the administration of the campus may be reflected in the subject files. Subjects
include systemwide administration, building of the campus, development of academic programs, the activities of individual
departments and institutes, fund raising, campus-community relations, student affairs, current events effecting the campus,
and committees at the campus and systemwide levels.
This series contains records vital to understanding the administrative decisions that have directed the development of UCSD
and provides important information on the activities of individual departments and other units of campus operation.
Administrative History
The Chancellor acts as head of administration and has general authority over the campus. He is responsible for setting up
the administrative structure and insuring that the various units function properly. He has specific delegated authority to
sign employment contracts of faculty and staff and to represent the University in public forums.
Herbert F. York was appointed first Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, in 1961. He was followed by Chancellor
John S. Galbraith (1964-1968), Chancellor William J. McGill (1968-1970), Acting Chancellor Herbert F. York (1970-1972), Chancellor
William D. McElroy (1972-1980), Chancellor Richard C. Atkinson (1980-1995) and Chancellor Robert C. Dynes (1996-present).
In 1972 the Office of the Chancellor created a central filing system that was to collect records from various administrative
offices. This central filing system became Administrative Records, and this office was later transferred from the Chancellor's
Office to the office of the Vice-Chancellor for Administration.
The files of Administrative Records originally contained materials from the offices of the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor for
Administration, Associate Vice-Chancellor for Business Management, Vice Chancellor for Financial Management, and selected
files from the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Currently, Administrative Records collects records from the office of
the Chancellor, Associate Vice-Chancellor for Business Affairs, and selected records from the Vice-Chancellor for Administration
and the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
