Abstract

Musical Portion
The musical portion of the Bukofzer library, bequeathed to the University last spring, consists of approximately 1000 volumes, of which some 450 are books on music, 150 are miniature scores and 400 are miscellaneous scores and editions of music. In addition to these volumes, there is a collection of more than 300 offprints sent by colleagues working in kindred fields, particularly medieval music and ethno-musicology. There are also several important sets of musical periodicals. The most valuable part of the collection for research purposes is the group of microfililms and record prints assembled by Professor Bukofzer in connection with his edition of the works of Dunstable and other studies of medieval and Renaissance music. Most of the important sources of music from the 13th through the 15th centuries are represented here. With these materials are Professor Bukofzer's research notes, files and unpublished transcriptions of early music, which will be invaluable aids to future scholars.
Many of the volumes are inscribed by distinguished musicologists, or bear marginal notes, amplifications and corrections in Professor Bukofzer's hand. The Music Library plans to shelve such materials in the Bukofzer Seminar Room in the new music library building, together with a complete set of the writings of this great scholar who played such an influential part in the development of the music collection at Berkeley. -

Non-musical Interests
Approximately half of Professor Bukofzer's library was given over to non-musical interests of surprising scope. His collection of 20th century German literature, primarily of the Weimar Republic era, is very comprehensive and certainly varied. At one moment we would turn up early editions of Kafka, Brecht, and Thomas Mann, and at the next moment, such a rara avis as Martin Borrmann's Venus mit dem Orgelspieler, Berlin , 1922. (Borrmann was one of Hitler's leading associates.) The remainder of the library is particularly strong in German writings in philosophy, economics, art and history.
At the moment of writing, three long-term orders have been filled from the Bukofzer collection; and several hundred more items from the non-musical collection will soon be incorporated into the Main Library.

Scope and Contents

Inventory of Uncataloged Manuscript Photocopies (Record Prints, Photostats, Glossy Prints, etc.) in the Manfred F. Bukofzer Collection of Research Materials.
This inventory of uncataloged manuscript photocopies left to the Music Library by Professor Bukofzer reflects his deep interest in English polyphony of the XIIIth, XIVth and XVth centuries. It is evident from a study of these photocopies that they served as a basis of documentation for a number of articles and studies. Most important seem to be: "Changing aspects of medieval and Renaiisance music," his two chapters in the New Oxford History of Music, volume III entitled "Popular and secular music in England (to 1470)" and "English church music of the fifteenth century," Studies in medieval and Renaissance Music and his "Sumer is icumen in", a revision. There is very little in these folders which relate to Bukofzer's edition of the complete works of John Dunstable, or to his Music in the Baroque Era.
This collection of photocopies is arranged as follows:
  1. 1. First, the materials were assigned to individual manila folders and numbered in order. There are a total of 181 folders.
  2. 2. The contents of each folder are identified according to city, library, and library signature. Wherever possible, the exact manuscript foliation of the photocopies has been cited.
  3. 3. In many cases the contents of the photocopies have been briefly described. Bibliographical references which describe the material have been given, the majority of descriptions are to be found in Gilbert Reaney's Manuscripts of polyphonic music 11th -early 14th century, 1966 (RISM B IV)
  4. 4. Finally, a physical description of the contents of each folder is provided; included are the number of photocopies, Bukofzer's notes, transcriptions, etc.
