SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE, 1865-1962.

Scope and Content Note

The files contain both incoming and outgoing letters, and occasionally include related materials. Annotations in a hand other than Parsons' are found on many of the incoming letters; these appear to have been used to briefly summarize the subject and content of a given letter, and not as filing indicators. File headings which were added during processing include: California State Officials, United States Congress, United States Presidents and State Department Officials, and Miscellaneous Government Officials. These contain letters written to or from various government officials and agencies in support of or about social causes of interest to Parsons. At the end of the series is a miscellany listed by type of correspondence, including: anonymous letters, telegrams, letters to Parsons from soldiers fighting in World Wars I and II, a small group of letters written to Bishop Kip by various correspondents, during his years as Bishop of California, and unidentified or fragmentary letters, both incoming and outgoing. A small amount of family correspondence is found in Series 9: Personal and Family Papers. Following what appears to have been Parsons' original filing scheme, correspondence is also found in many of the other series, especially Series 5: Organizations and Subject Files, 1886-1958. In addition, Parsons selected significant amounts of his original correspondence to pull for use by Massey Shepherd in the preparation of his biography, and these letters are retained with Parsons' notes to Shepherd in Series 10.

SERIES 6: SERMONS AND ADDRESSES, 1892-1958.

Scope and Content Note

Divided into 3 subseries: Sermons; Addresses; and Sermons, Addresses, and Notes. Within each subseries, Parsons further categorized his sermons and addresses numerically, alphabetically or by code, and sometimes by subject as well. Illustrating Parsons' meticulous efforts at categorization and organization, and the evolution of his sermon preparations, nearly every sermon contains notations about where and on which dates it was delivered. Sermons were regularly recycled and sometimes used as addresses or vice versa. Early in his career, Parsons wrote complete sermons in a narrative style, although he often made use of symbols to avoid repetition of words such as Christ. Around 1920, he began to abandon full narrative for notes in an outline format, which eventually became quite brief. All headings are those used by Parsons, with the exception of Sermons, Addresses, and Notes, which includes scraps of a variety of writings, fragmentary notes, and portions of larger, unidentifiable and often undated works.

SERIES 9: PERSONAL AND FAMILY PAPERS, 1874-1960.

Scope and Content Note

Parsons carried pocket notebooks with him and jotted down ideas, critical comments, and other information on a fairly regular basis. Notebooks include these personal notes which he usually labeled "daily notes," as well as other notebooks containing "reflections" on Bible passages, lengthy "meditations" on biblical themes, lists of Committees, and some accounts. Scrapbooks consists of material Parsons collected in envelopes arranged chronologically by year, but never actually mounted in volumes. These materials have been foldered and contain programs, invitations, itineraries, postcards, maps, occasional letters, and clippings, and provide an overview of a his yearly itinerary. School Notes contains his class notes from Parsons' own years as an undergraduate at Harvard and the New York Divinity School. Correspondence is an extensive collection of letters written by Parsons to his family in 1919 from Europe, letters about his son Arthur who served with the American Friends of Greece in the Second World War, correspondence concerning a call to a congregation in New York, general correspondence with family members, and a few personal Papers about financial affairs. Also found here are letters of congratulation on Parsons' various ordinations, anniversaries, and birthdays along with condolences on his wife's death, and personal tributes. Miscellaneous includes Parsons' collection of poems and prayers, biographical material, ephemera, a number of personal books either with notations or which he used in his career as a churchman, and clippings about Parsons and his career. An oversize folder contains seven items of memorabilia including a poster for an evensong sermon by Parsons, a blueprint of a tablet by the Gorham Co. for the Clark family vault, and printed certificates.

SERIES 10: MASSEY SHEPHERD RESEARCH ON PARSONS, ca. 1950-1968.

Scope and Content Note

Shepherd's research was collected for a biography of Parsons. Parsons participated actively in its writing and much of the material in this series consists of material and correspondence Parsons removed from his personal files and sent to Shepherd to facilitate his research and writing. Other material was collected by Shepherd from friends, college classmates, church members, and colleagues. The series begins with Shepherd's manuscript and a copy of the completed book. Chapter manuscripts often have corrections or suggestions in Parsons' hand and sometimes include a lengthy hand or typewritten criticism separately. The book is followed by correspondence and research files, arranged by subject.
