Subseries 2.2.  Correspondence 1928-1964

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by correspondent

Scope and Contents

Contains Catherine Bauer Wurster’s general professional correspondence with associates, public agency administrators, government officials, grant-making foundations (Ford Foundation, Guggenheim), educators, writers, other colleagues, requests for professional recommendations, and requests to publishers and authors for copies of their publications. By her own admission, she had difficulty separating personal and professional relationships which is evident throughout this correspondence. Extensive correspondence with some colleagues who worked for multiple agencies and institutions during their careers including: Charles Abrams, Leon Keyserling, Albert Mayer, Clarence Stein, Robert C. Weaver, and Coleman Woodbury. Included is notable correspondence with Harry Hopkins, Robert M. La Follette, Jr., Carey McWilliams, and significant correspondence, including editorial commentary and notes, with cultural critic and friend, Lewis Mumford.

Subseries 3.5.  India Projects 1944-1963

Scope and Contents

There were a number of India projects between 1957 and 1961, many of these were funded by the Ford Foundation. The earliest, the New Delhi Regional Plan, included CBW as a consultant. This was followed by a 1957 meeting in New Delhi, where Dr. Douglas Ensminger of the Ford Foundation asked William Wurster if UCB would be willing to undertake an architectural project with the Indian government. A year later, in 1958 Ensminger, his colleague Jean Joyce, WWW, CBW and new architecture faculty member Ezra Ehrenkrantz met in San Francisco to determine the nature of the project. The aims of the project were preparation for a survey and exhibit on Architectural Design, India (1959-1960). Unfortunately, in 1960, the Ford Foundation insisted on split funding with the Indian Government which could not provide sufficient funds for the project to take place. In 1959, CBW received funding from XXX at UC Berkeley to conduct research of her own in India. Most of the research material in the India subseries was collected during this period. The Ford Foundation also provided support for a Seminar on Urbanization in India and assistance to foreign participants who wished to attend the Seminar (1959-1961). Lastly CBW served as a consultant on a Ford Foundation grant to the Government of West Bengal looking at Training and Research Activities of the Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Organization (1961-1964) and the Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Project. This subseries includes extensive correspondence with Albert Mayer, Richard Park, Paul Ylvisaker, and others.

Series 4.  Educator 1934-1964

Arrangement

Arranged into sub-series by institution and by units under the University of California

Scope and Contents

Contains documentation on the Education of Planners and from Catherine Bauer Wurster‘s career as an educator beginning in 1940 as the Rosenberg Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare and then for a Mills College Seminar on Housing and later as guest lecturer (1942, 1963). Also documented are her academic roles as lecturer in the Regional Planning Department at Harvard (1946-1949) with guest lectureships at University of Wisconsin at Madison (Knapp Foundation Lecturer, 1946), Cornell University (Messenger Lecturer, 1948), M.I.T. (1948), the New School in New York (1948), Diablo Valley College (1963), University of Pennsylvania (1955), and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1950, 1961).
In 1950, Catherine Bauer and William Wurster returned to the University of California at Berkeley from Cambridge, MA. The bulk of material in this series focuses primarily on her role on the faculty of the Department of City and Regional Planning, and later as Assistant Dean in the College of Environmental Design. It includes lecture, seminar and workshop materials, thesis and other student papers and correspondence, bibliographic materials and notes, and planning documents and associated materials for the Department of City and Regional Planning, College of Environmental Design, Institute of Urban and Regional Development, and UC organized conferences (1955-1964). Includes correspondence and other papers related to CBW’s experience during the UC’s controversial Loyalty Oath policy, 1950-1951.

Scope and Contents

Contains materials collected by Catherine Bauer Wurster for research, primarily on the topics of housing and city and regional planning. Housing topics include: public housing, affordable housing, cooperative housing, university housing, housing finance, rural housing, fair housing and discrimination in housing, and defense housing. Regional planning topics include: land use, state planning, post-war planning, industry, technology and transportation planning. City planning topics include: new towns, planned communities, metropolitan problems and zoning. Urban renewal topics include: slum clearance, planning commissions and urban redevelopment agencies. Geographic locations include cities in California and other North American locales, select cities and regions in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. The bulk of the documentation focuses on the cities and regions within the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C.

Arrangement
