Penry, William C.
Business papers and correspondence in connection with operation of the Amador Dispatch newspaper and the Amador Telegraph
Company, both in Jackson, California.
William C. Penry was born in Mississippi September 17, 1838. He came to San Francisco in 1857, where he worked for a few months
as a printer. After leaving San Francisco he purchased an interest in the Folsom Dispatch newspaper, which he later sold.
He founded a newspaper, the Folsom Telegraph, also sold. In 1863 or 1864 he moved to Jackson, where he reestablished the Amador
Dispatch newspaper. He published it and aided in its publication for thirty-four years. He sold it in 1896. He was co-proprietor
of the Amador Telegraph Company from approximately 1891 to 1895. He married Jennie Barton in 1870. He died on December 13,
1921.
