Series 7: Course Materials, 1934-1978

Scope and Content Note

Mandelbaum made and kept extensive handwritten and typed notes for the courses he gave at the University of Minnesota and the University of California, Berkeley. At Minnesota he taught a radio course entitled Anthropology in Action, and courses dealing with such themes as primitive art, ethnology of India, Native American ethnology, and acculturation. At Berkeley, he offered classes on the nature of culture, peoples of India and South Asia, religion and anthropology, and graduate seminars in various fields.
There are two sub-series: notes for classes given at the University of Minnesota, 1934-1946, where he began his teaching career, and those for courses at the University of California, Berkeley, 1946-1978. The Minnesota files are arranged alphabetically by course title, and the Berkeley class notes are arranged numerically by course number.

Series 8 contains a wealth of detailed field notes and journals. Mandelbaum continued his research and writing on the Nilgiri Hill tribes, particularly the Kota and Toda, from the 1930's through the 1980's. He visited the Plains Cree in Saskatchewan to record the Sun Dance Ceremony many years after carrying out his initial fieldwork, which had formed the basis for his doctoral dissertation at Yale University.
Included in this series are field notes, field journals, research notes, correspondence, newsclippings, and subject files concerning the Plains Cree, Jews of Ansonia, Connecticut, Chippewa, Cochin Jews, and peoples of India. The files are arranged in the order in which Mandelbaum did his fieldwork with each group, except that India materials have been kept together. The last few folders in the series contain notes on general topics, such as religion, civilization and culture, and myth and history.
