Scope and Contents
This material spans the period from 1900-1918 with the bulk from between 1914 and 1917. The collection consists of letters,
bills, contracts, powers of attorney and other legal & financial papers, notes, clippings and printed material, photographs,
and maps.
The subject matter pertains almost exclusively to Deitrick's business dealings in Russia, China, Nicaragua, Mexico and the
United States. This includes construction of railroads, development of mining and agricultural lands and resources, sale of
farm equipment, and war material. A few items touch on political affairs, particularly the correspondence with Sun Yat-sen,
H. C. Stuart, Herbert Hoover and the Nathan Hale volunteers.
Separated Materials
The majority of letters between Sun Yat-sen and Deitrick as well as Henry Clifford Stuart have been separated in their own
collection (https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/4082764). However, at least two substantive letters, as well as several brief telegrams by Sun remain with the James Deitrick papers.
Some letters to and about Sun also remain.
