Biography
Guy Wellington Cook was Vice Principal (1942-44), and subsequently
Principal (1944-45), of Tri-State High School at the Tule Lake Relocation
Center (Newell, Calif.). His wife, Marguerite, was a seventh grade English and
Social Studies teacher in the Center junior high school. The Cooks collected
materials pertaining to Tule Lake and other relocation centers throughout World
War II. They also corresponded with teachers and internees who left the Tule
Lake in the course of the War.
Scope and Content
This collection contains materials collected by the Cooks during their
employment at Tule Lake. Much of the collection focuses on education, although
there are also materials of a more general and of a more specifically personal
nature. Of particular interest are faculty narratives describing the problems
of teaching in a relocation center and student autobiographies chronicling
their adjustment to relocation. The collection also contains substantial
clippings and report files that document the segregation of "disloyal"
Japanese-Americans at Tule Lake, the uprising of 1943, and the repatriation to
Japan of "disloyals" following the War. The Cook Collection also contains a
small body of materials pertaining to Centers other than Tule Lake (see
Index).
