[Postcard with Olympic Motto].
"This picture is an air view of housing conditions as they existed during the early Olympiads."
This photo was made from the Sunday supplement of the Los Angeles Times. It gives a plot plan of the housing conditions as they exist for the 1932 Olympiad. (This is Olympic Village)."
"An air view of Olympic Village completed. You are looking at the most complete and efficient method of housing athletes that any Olympiad has known.
"Floor joists used in construction of individual houses were 4x4 redwood. These can be seen in the picture; also the plumbing waste lines can be seen. The waste lines were constructed of galvanized iron down-spouting with soldered joints. Sizes range from 1/1/2" at the fixture, increasing to 21/2" at base of shower."
"A series of individual floor foundations, rough construction."
"A close-up of the galvanized shower room floor is here shown. The water supply pipe, which is copper tubing, can be seen in the foreground. This type of pipe was used in order to cut down on expenses. This tubing can be bent around corners, eliminating the use of fittings."
"Another step in this volume type construction. The floor has been laid and the porch attached to building. The galvanized shower room floor can be seen laying in position, upside down."
"Buildings were put up in sections; carpenters are seen setting a section in place. Louvers in ends of building can be readily seen. These louvers assisted in supplying fresh air at all times to the individual sleeping rooms. The material used in bldg [sic] construction, walls & roof was compressed wood pulp - trade name being "Celetex."
"Another section in place."
[Exterior view] "A completed dwelling. This house contains two sleeping rooms, with adjoining shower. These rooms are 10' x 10'. Each room is supplied with four windows measuring 2'x2'6". This window area plus the louvers assures sufficient ventilation at all times for the athletes."
"A cross-sectional view of the interior of one of the cottages is here shown. This picture gives a still better idea of the construction and furnishings."
"Another interior view showing a small lavatory and the entrance to the shower room."
"An interior view showing the type of furnishings used. The use of a Simons bed has assured the proper night's sleep. This is portrayed by the athlete in the picture."
"An interior of the shower room. These walls have been properly treated to assure water- proofing."
"Public toilet under construction."
"The type of patented toilet bowl and seat used in all these toilet buildings. A total of fourteen toilets are located in each building."
[Toilet] "This picture with the seat raised shows the trap flaps which are operated by trigger in the foreground. When trap flaps are closed odors are carried off by a three-inch vent pipe twenty feet in height."
[Toilet] "Close-up showing how trigger operates the flaps when pressure is exterted on the seat."
"Five urinals were located in each toilet building in conjunction with the fourteen toilets."
"Completed toilet building." [Exterior view].
"This picture shows the rear view of the houses. In the center can be seen the public toilets. These latrines are located throughout the grounds at three-hundred-feet intervals."
"Steam rub down and tub baths are located in this building, which is under construction."
"Interior scene of shower bath building. In the foreground is a rubber pan containing a 1% hypochlorite solution- this to be used in curbing the spread of foot fungus."
"This is a complete picture showing the same building." [Exterior view].
"Looking down one of the finished streets in Olympic Village, showing a portion of the 500 houses located here. All dwellings are spaced ten feet apart."
"Another street scene." [Olympic Village].
"Another street scene." [Olympic Village].
"Another street scene with administration offices in the distance."
"The next three pictures show mess halls under construction. These give a very good idea of their size."
[Mess Hall under construction].
[Mess Hall under construction].
"Another mess hall view."
"Interior view of the Japanese Mess Hall."
"Rear view of mess hall showing garbage containers and flamo heat containers."
"Close-up view of fly-proofed garbage bin."
"Hospital under construction."
"Another view of the hospital after completion."
"This is the front view of the administration buildings, and the entrance to the village."
"Public rest rooms can be seen in the distance. These were located outside the Village and close to the parking station."
"Another view of the administrative offices and the entrance to the village."
"The water supply system is next. The pump house can be seen in the foreground with four 11,000 gal. tanks. Two 6" centrifical pumps were used to maintain a constant pressure of 40 lbs. on the lines. This water was lifted by a 6" centrifical pump on a 75 h.p. motor which was located at a distance of 32,000' from these tanks and 137' below this elevation."
"The construction of two buildings around the original pump house eliminated the noise of the motors used to maintain a constant pressure on the water lines. This picture illustrates this."
"Fire protection was furnished by the Los Angeles Fire Department." [Exterior of Engine Co. 75].
"This is the entrance of the Olympic Stadium where all the track and field events were held."
"This picture was taken at the opening ceremony which was held in Olympic Stadium, with 105,000 persons in attendance." [Aerial view of stadium. Photo from Goodyear Blimp.]
"An air view of the Olympic Swimming Stadium." [copyright Kopec. Taken from Goodyear Blimp.]
"These are the call letters of the short wave sending and receiving station which is located at Olympic Village. Messages are sent free of charge to all foreign countries for the athletes housed at the Village. [Red, white and blue card].
"This map gives a ground layout of the Olympic Village with house numbering. The legend in colors denotes the houses occupied by athletes from the various countries." [Map with handwritten annotations. Oversized item housed in Box #4]
"The rubbish and cans were taken care of in the above manner. Cans were thoroughly burned and then hauled away to a near-by dump."
"The beginning of the end, houses are being dismantled."
