Series Description

 

Series 1: CSU Administration

Physical Description: .5 linear ft.

Scope and Content Note

The first series dating from 1963 to 1986, contains photos taken by the CSU Public Affairs Office of key event, key people, and milestones in the history of the CSU system. Key events and milestones include the creation and dedication of the CSU Archives, the construction and groundbreaking ceremony for the CSU headquarters in Long Beach, CA, the moment when Governor Ronald Regan signed a bill changing the system's name from Cal State Colleges to Cal State University and Colleges (as noted in the history section, "Colleges" was later dropped), displays created for the CSU 10th and 25th Anniversary, and the first CSU honorary degree bestowed to President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Among the key people included here are the first three chancellors: Buell Gallagher, Glenn S. Dumke, and Wynetka Ann Reynolds; members of the Board of Trustees; and members of the CSU Academic Senate.
 

Series 2: Individual CSU Campuses

Scope and Content Note

The second series, dating from the late 1890s-1985, contains photo's of the following CSU campuses taken by Public Affairs or obtained from the individual colleges: CSU, Bakersfield; Chico State University; CSU, Dominguez Hills; Fresno State University; CSU, Fullerton; CSU, Hayward; Humboldt State University; CSU, Long Beach; CSU, Northridge; CSU, Los Angeles; California State Polytechnic, Pomona; CSU, Sacramento State University; San Bernardino State University; San Diego State University; San Francisco State University ; San Jose State University; California State Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo; Sonoma State University; CSU, Stanislaus. Before appraisal, each college listed here had several folders dividing photos from each school into different categories. For example, photos of CSU, Humboldt were divided into folders with the following titles: CSU, Humboldt Buildings; CSU, Humboldt Classroom; CSU, Humboldt Faculty, Staff & Students; CSU, Humboldt Graduation; CSU, Humboldt Student Activities. These folders were consolidated into one folder now currently titled "CSU, Humboldt" without subject headings because it should be apparent to a researcher what is depicted in the photograph, be it a building, a classroom, or a person. The extra folders also took up unnecessary space since many only contained one or two pictures. Of interest in this series are historical prints of San Jose State University and San Diego State University, the oldest campuses, depicting them when they were still called "Normal Schools;" 1906 photos of the San Francisco Normal School after the great earthquake; and photos of famous people--from Alex Haley to President John F. Kennedy at various individual branches of the CSU.
