    Abstract: Photographs from the Marsh and Camron (Cameron) family. Collection includes large number of portraits and several albums of the Marsh and Camron (Cameron) families and friends. In addition, views taken in San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Mill Valley, Pleasanton, Auburn, Ben Lomond, Soda Spring, Calif. and other locations (Honolulu) are present. Photos depict city views, missions, ships, camping, vacationing, and exteriors and interiors of residences.

    Collection is open for research, except for portraits (tintype and portrait on ivory[?]), which are restricted. Use of portraits only by permission of the appropriate curator.     Gift of the estate of Amy Gertrude Cameron, with additions from the estate of Dorothy V. Lyman, 1965.

    Biographical Information

    John Marsh and his wife Abigail Smith (Tuck) Marsh were early California pioneers in Contra Costa County. Their daughter, Alice, married William Walker Camron, a landowner in the vicinity of Orinda, Calif. and, later, a resident of Oakland, Calif. Alice and/or her daughter changed the spelling of their surname to Cameron.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    Photographs from the Marsh and Camron (Cameron) family. Collection includes large number of portraits and several photograph albums of the Marsh and Camron (Cameron) families and friends. In addition, views taken in San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Mill Valley, Pleasanton, Auburn, Ben Lomond, Soda Spring, Calif. and other locations are present. Photos depict city views, missions, ships, camping, vacationing, and exteriors and interiors of residences. Two 1860s cartes de visite photographs by W. Dickson of Honolulu are included, picturing a grass house and poi eaters. One ambrotype (collodion positive) plate of the John Marsh home (Brentwood area, Contra Costa Co., Calif.) and numerous later views of the home and the historic marker erected are present.
