Biography

Collected papers of prominent San Francisco lawyer, legislator and settler of 1849. Among his achievements while residing in California he was mayor of Oakland, a correspondent for the Daily Evening Bulletin, a founder and later regent of the University of California, Berkeley, and a state legislator.

Scope and Content

Collection includes his personal and business records, appointment book, 1873, clippings from newspapers for which JWD wrote; personal and business records of William Worthington Chipman; original survey and land transaction for the Encinal San Antonio, later to become the city of Alameda; newspaper clippings pertaining to provision of city water, 1877.

Documents pertaining to WWC. Includes deed to property in Alameda, 1865, survey of San Antonio Ranch, 1874, original and typed copy of original land transaction for Alameda, 1852, and survey of Encinal San Antonio, 1851-1852.

Personal and business correspondence of Dwinelle, 1825-1879; also obituaries of his death, and the papers of his second wife Caroline to 1907.

Bound scrapbook of clippings, Notes of Travel, 2 volumes from Rochester Union & Advertiser, the Daily Advertiser, San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin, Oakland Daily News, and the Daily Alta California-S.F. Times. Travel accounts by Murex and Growler, as well as some signed by JWD, of trips to Europe, and the American South and West, 1849-1870
