Biography

This collection relates to several citizen run organizations which existed in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood in the 1970's. They were donated to UCSF Special Collections by Margaret McMurray, RN. who was active in these and other community organizing efforts during this period.
The Haight Ashbury Health Committee (HAHC) served as a forum for community residents and health care workers to organize and improve health resources in the neighborhood. HAHC records include minutes, reports and other papers generated by the Committee as well as related community heath materials. The bulk of these files reflect the period of 1971-75.
Haight Ashbury Senior Services (HASS) was a project funded in 1975 by the San Francisco Office of Aging, under title III of the Older Americans Act. It provided information, referral and follow up services for people over age 60 who lived in the Haight Ashbury. HASS files cover the project's activities from 1975-80. Related and predating materials are included from 1972-75.
HANC, the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council, was a community organizing effort begun in the early 1960's to monitor and improve housing and neighborhood planning. This collection of records relates to HANC activities from 1972-82. A number of earlier documents from other agencies which relate to urban planning and housing in the area are included. A number of files contain materials addressing the relationship between UCSF and the surrounding neighborhood.
The final record group, entitled Haight Ashbury Neighborhood, is an organic collection of community based periodicals and ephemera which relate to multiple community issues.
Together these papers record several important community based efforts to foster increased health, services and a better overall environment for the vibrant urban neighborhood adjacent to UCSF during the rapidly changing decade of the 1970's.
