    Biographical / Historical

Oliver Mayer is a Latino playwright born in Los Angeles, CA. His mother is Mexican-American, an actress who gave up the theatre for marriage; his father, Alexander, was a film and television art director. A self-described "punk" in high school, Mayer went on to a highly successful academic career at Cornell, Oxford and Columbia universities. BLADE TO THE HEAT has received the most attention of the plays he has written. He inherited his passion for boxing from his father and Mexican grandfather and trained in the sport from the ages of 13 to 15. He was on the artistic staff of the Mark Taper Forum for eight years, which is also where BLADE TO THE HEAT made its debut. He later taught at UC Riverside and is currently a Professor in Dramatic Writing at the University of Southern California.
He is married to the actress, Marlene Forte.
