Biography

Charles Graves, a physician from La Jolla, California, photographed the early development of UCSD.

Scope and Content of Collection

Charles Graves's photographic documentary of early UCSD history (1963-1967) entitled UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO: THE BEGINNING documents the construction of Revelle College buildings, campus events and activities of the first undergraduate class. The collection is arranged in two series: 1) SLIDES and 2) FILMS. The slides and film were made simultaneously and record the same subjects.
SERIES 1: SLIDES
The 35mm color slides document the construction and dedication of Revelle College, the dedication of Bonner Hall and student activities including elections, the student senate and the first Watermelon Drop. Also depicted are Camp Matthews buildings and the inauguration of the second UCSD chancellor John S. Galbraith on November 5, 1965. The slides are organized in groups to represent the four slide trays in which they were originally housed. Graves's manuscript notes precede the slides and his descriptions are included in each folder heading.
SERIES 2: FILMS
The 16 mm color films document the same subjects as the slide show and have been reformatted to VHS videotape. Also included are film clips not used in the edited reels.
