Scope and Content
This collection of documents supplements the collection of Castro papers obtained by H. H. Bancroft. It
contains materials relating to family and business matters, especially transactions involving cattle and
land. Also included are papers relating to the estate of Josi Simesn Juan Nepomuceno Castro and
documents concerning Manuel Castro's military command in Baja California. The provenance of the papers
is uncertain; they may have been part of the Cowan Collection. The documents, housed in three boxes, are
arranged chronologically, with the exception of some accounts and land papers in Box 3 which have been
placed in related groups. A calendar of the documents and an index of correspondents and/or signers of
documents follow.
