Scope and Contents note

Official correspondence, reports, memoranda, orders, vouchers, messages, notes, rosters, lists, conference papers, minutes, charts, maps, and diagrams accumulated by Cooke during his naval career. The organization of material, patterned as closely as possible after Cooke's own organization, begins with a chronological arrangement of the Navy Department orders affecting Cooke's duty assignments, continues with a chronological arrangement (by year, month, and day) of material dealing with general naval affairs, and concludes with an alphabetical arrangement of material related to major projects and assignments in which Cooke was involved. Citations to selected memoranda and reports have been added under many subseries in order to indicate the variety and significance of the material authored and collected by Cooke during his career.
