Historical Background

The Ione and Eastern Railroad, formed in 1906, ran from Ione to Martell in California's Sierra Nevada foothills. The line was a 13-mile extension of the Amador Central Railroad. Initially its purpose was to provide transportation from Ione to Jackson and Amador City during periods of inclement weather. Regular shipments on the Ione and Eastern consisted of gold ore from local mines, as well as supplies bound for the mines. Later shipments included gold ore on its way to smelters, and firebricks from pits near Ione.
