Series Descriptions

China Trip

Physical Description: 1 folder, 1 diary, 1 photo album

Scope and Content Note

In 1921, at the age of nineteen, Rogers was chosen by the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) as one of ten youth delegates representing the US at the WSCF conference in Peking, China the following April. The conference lasted only one week, but the trip, for which Rogers missed half of his junior year in college, lasted from February to August, and included official WSCF and unofficial visits to Japan, Korea and the Philippines. Although he remained Christian, Rogers considered this trip as essentially a religious conversion, due to an exposure to new philosophies, a first-hand view of the downtrodden, and peak experiences in nature, particularly a climb up Mt. Fujiyama.
This series includes an extensive typewritten diary, an album of photographs, and supplementary correspondence.

Biographical

Physical Description: 1 photo album, 1 cassette tape, 1 box ephemera, 15 folders

Scope and Content Note

This series contains material about Rogers or material that shows something of his personality. Elements include audiovisual materials in the form of family portraits; photographs; one film reel (family, late '20s); one home movie; four cassettes of family members at a conference; one videotape (3/4"?) of family at a conference. Also: genealogical data, personal items, passports for CRR as well as Helen Rogers. Press clippings. Eulogies and obituaries. Pocket calendars from 1980-1986.

Awards and Honors

Physical Description: 12 folders

Scope and Content Note

Rogers received many honors during his career; this series represents those honors. Included are certificates of recognition, awards, honorary degrees, and accompanying photographs.

Diaries

Physical Description: 2 boxes = 14 diaries

Scope and Content Note

The Diaries series contains fourteen notebooks from the period of 1977 - 1982. Eleven notebooks contain travel notes, primarily concerning workshops. In addition to practical notes and narrative description, these diaries contain observations on the workshops and thoughts on Rogers's relationships with women. One notebook relates dreams, memories, and personal musings unrelated to travel, and two others are purely records of dreams. All of the diaries are currently restricted.

University of Chicago Counseling Center Discussion Papers

Physical Description: 3 boxes

Scope and Content Note

Rogers established the first Counseling Center at the University of Chicago when he moved there from Ohio State in 1945. The Counseling Center Discussion Papers were ideas, ruminations, or research papers privately circulated to Counseling Center staff and other interested affiliates for the purpose of feedback, review and discussion. These papers were seen as a place for free exchange of ideas, speculation, and development of theories and philosophies. Nine volumes were printed, from 1955 - 1963, under the editorship of first Rogers, then Jack Butler, James Bebout, and finally Martha Clayton and Arnold Rachman.

Arrangement

The University of Chicago Counseling Center Discussion Papers are arranged chronologically.

Correspondence

Physical Description: 4 boxes

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this series is formed by letters between Rogers and his fiancée Helen Elliott from 1921 to 1924, the period of their courtship during which he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Also included in the series are letters to Helen, 1974 - 1978; professional correspondence, 1950 - 1968; and letters of condolence to Rogers on his wife's death, 1979.

Center for the Studies of the Person

Physical Description: 21 Boxes

Scope and Content Note

Rogers founded this loosely-organized Center ("a non-organization") with approximately twenty-five of his associates from WBSI in 1968 as a base for its members' various projects and workshops. Only the secretaries received a salary, and no one person ran the Center; the "non-director," a rotating position, acted as spokesperson. The CSP continues at its original location in La Jolla. For sound recordings and videotapes of CSP lectures and workshops, see the Audiovisual series.
Subseries
Administrative: Group notices, minutes of annual and board meetings, Center-wide grant seeking, celebrations, and other general issues that affected all members of CSP.
Carl Rogers and Associateswas an advanced learning program using the Person-Centered Approach. It also incorporated the Ongoing Learning Program "Responsible Group," a dozen or so CSP associates who were more involved in the operations of CSP and CR & A.
The Carl Rogers Peace Project / Institute for Peacewas created and co-directed by Gay Leah Swenson. The former name was used prior to Rogers's death in 197; the latter was adopted following his death.
Conference: "The Central America Challenge" (The Vienna Peace Project Workshop, Rust, Austria, 1 - 4 November 1985). This was the Peace Project's first international person-centered workshop, and was attended by sixty-five leaders from seventeen countries in an attempt to find a common bond of humanity.
Living Nowis a workshop-oriented program headed by Gay Leah Swenson and Nel Kandel, but drawing upon the skills and interests of other CSP staffers to lead seminars and workshops. Such topics as maximizing personal potential within times of personal and global transition.
The Workshopssubseries contains those few workshops held under the general auspices of the CSP, rather than one if its sub-groups.

Arrangement

The Center for the Studies of the Person materials are arranged by subseries; within the subseries the arrangement is generally chronological. Some of the subseries relate to a particular program within CSP, e.g., Living Now, whereas others affect all those involved with CSP, e.g., Administrative. The Peace Project subseries is further divided into sub-subseries.

Carl Rogers Memorial Library

Physical Description: 18 Boxes

Scope and Content Note

This series of reprints and offprints comes from the Carl Rogers Memorial Library of the CSP. It includes approximately 600 articles, chapters, interviews, and unpublished manuscripts spanning the years 1922 -1987. These materials were initially collected and arranged by Nel Kandel, director of the Carl Rogers Memorial Library. This collection of reprints was given to the Humanistic Psychology Archives and has been incorporated into the Carl R. Rogers Collection. Only information from the CRML file has been used in creating this series list. As a result the individual records may appear incomplete, e.g., no journal citation, no page numbers, etc. The identifying number or number-letter combination in the subseries of materials by Rogers represents the year of publication and the sequence of publication among Rogers's publications during that year. These numbers were assigned by the Schmid bibliography of Rogers's works in Vienna.

Arrangement

The Carl Rogers Memorial Library reprints are divided between works by Rogers and works about Rogers, and are arranged alphabetically within those divisions.

Audiovisual Materials

Physical Description: Approximately 300 items

Scope and Content Note

This is a separate series for sound recordings, film reels, and video recordings that do not fit with any other series, e.g., Biographical. This series is primarily comprised of recordings of Rogers at work: delivering lectures, working with groups, interviewing clients. In addition, many other CSP staff members and guest lecturers are represented, either in collaboration with Rogers or on their own.

Arrangement

Arrangement and reformatting of audiovisual materials is currently underway. Approximately 400 audio recordings and 60 video cassettes have been indexed as of December 1999.
