The McNeilly Collection consists of pamphlets, flyers, programs, maps, postcards and ephemera pertaining to the San Francisco Golden Gate Exposition (1939-1940).
- Biographical / historical:
-
The Golden Gate Exposition site on Treasure Island, San Francisco Bay, was created by filling in a shoal off Yerba Buena Island (1932-1938) at the time of the construction of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The new island was created by the U.S. Army as the eventual site of an international airport. To celebrate the completion of the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge, however, it was first determined to sponsor a two year long World's Fair on Treasure Island. Janice McNeilly, a young San Joaquin County woman, attended this Golden Gate Exposition (1939-1940). While there she collected materials published by organizers of the Exposition as well as others provided by exhibitors there.
