    Abstract: B. Traven (1890?-1969) was a seaman and author. His publications include The cotton pickers (1956), The treasure of Sierra Madre (1935), and The white rose (1965). The collection consists of several articles by Lawrence Clark Powell about B. Traven, as well as a copy of Edward R. Hagemann's article, A checklist of the works of B. Traven and the critical estimates and biographical essays on him; together with a brief biography.

    Biography

    Much of the biographical information about B. Traven is conjectural; he may have been born Berick Traven Torsvan on March 5, 1890 in Chicago, Illinois; went to sea as a cabin boy around 1900 or 1912; later became a seaman; spent some time in London and Berlin, before settling in Mexico about 1920-22; wrote in German; titles in English translation include The death ship: the story of an American sailor (1934), The cotton pickers (1956), The treasure of Sierra Madre (1935), The bridge in the jungle (1938), and The white rose (1965); he died on March 27, 1969.

    Scope and Content

    Collection consists of several articles by Lawrence Clark Powell about the novelist B. Traven, as well as a copy of Edward R. Hagemann's article, A checklist of the works of B. Traven and the critical estimates and biographical essays on him; together with a brief biography, in the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, first quarter, 1959.
