Biography
Countess Russell (1866-1941), English authoress, was known better by the name "Elizabeth," after publishing her most famous
novel
Elizabeth and her German Garden. She was the daughter of Henry Herron Beauchamp and a cousin of Katherine Mansfield. She married Count Henning August von Arnim
(d. 1910) and spent 20 years on his East Prussian estate (Nassenheide). Elizabeth returned to England and married John Francis
Stanley Russell, 2nd Earl Russell in 1916. They were separated in 1919. Her friends included many writers and also the select
groups which visited her estate. She travelled extensively in Europe and the United States before her death in 1941. [For
further information see Leslie de Charms'
Elizabeth of the German Garden, 1958; this biography was written by her daughter, Elizabeth (von Arnim) Butterworth]
Subject matter
The collection includes almost all of Elizabeth's journals between 1896-1941. These journals entail day-to-day activities,
a record of visitors, and occasional reflections. There is also a typewritten copy of the journals which has many attached
letters written to her family. The collection of manuscripts includes some unpublished and incomplete writings of Elizabeth.
E. M. Forster's remembrance of Nassenheide and various letters and printed material were deposited later into the collection
by Mrs. Butterworth while she was working on Elizabeth's biography. Elizabeth's correspondence with literary figures and friends
is detailed and quite comlete in most cases, and it gives an interesting account of her life and literary work.
