Abstract: Robert Willard Hodgson (1893-1966) developed the College of Agriculture at the Southern branch of the University of California and became professor of subtropical horticulture (1935). He was named assistant dean of the College of Agriculture and assistant director of the Agriculture Experiment Station (1943), and became dean of the college in 1952. The collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, scrapbooks, notebooks, class notes, teaching materials, memoranda, clippings, reports, and memorabilia of Robert Hodgson.

Biography

Robert Willard Hodgson was born on April 3, 1893 in Dallas, Texas; BS, 1916, and MS, 1917, University of California at Berkeley; served as as an assistant in botany and became instructor in citriculture in 1917; with J. Eliot Coit, founded the Agricultural Extension Service in Los Angeles, 1918; served as farm advisor, Los Angeles County, 1919-24; became associate professor of subtropical horticulture, University of California at Berkeley, and associate citriculturist in the Agriculture Experiment Station; became head of Division of Subtropical Horticulture, 1925; after the division was transferred to the Los Angeles campus in 1932, Hodgson developed the College of Agriculture there; became professor of subtropical horticulture, 1935; named assistant dean of the College of Agriculture and assistant director of the Agriculture Experiment Station, 1943; became dean of the college in 1952 until he retired in 1960; wrote many books, including Analyzing the Citrus Orchard by Means of Simple Tree Records (1923) and The California Avocado Industry (1930); he died on May 17, 1966 in Los Angeles.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, scrapbooks, notebooks, class notes, teaching materials, memoranda, clippings, reports, and memorabilia of subtropical horticulturist and professor of agriculture Robert Willard Hodgson. Correspondents include Henri Chapot, I. Judson Condit, Mildred E. Mathias, John Martin Reinicke, Knowles A. Ryerson, and C.A. Schroeder. Also includes itineraries, field notes, and technical reports from Hodgson's advising assignments in Tunisia, Morocco, India, Egypt, Cyprus, Chile, Palestine, Sudan, Libya, and Nepal. Portions of the collection are in French or Spanish.
