    Provenance

The Maritime photographs from The San Francisco News-Call Bulletin newspaper photograph archive were donated to the National Park Service National Maritime Museum, a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, by the San Francisco Public Library on February 24, 1982. The photographs were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park when it was established as a separate park in June 27, 1988. They had been part of the files (or "photograph morgue") of The San Francisco News-Call Bulletin, which were given to the public library after the newspaper was merged with The San Francisco Examiner in 1965.
For more information, see the Provenance Note and Historical Note in the finding aid for entire dispersed collection.

    Scope and Content Note

The bulk of these photographs, used to illustrate news stories on maritime subjects, date from the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Earlier images, dating to the 1890's, are occasionally found, but in the form of later copy photographs. The majority of images are from news agencies or wire services, together with some by local staff photographers. They include photographs of shipwrecks, strandings, vessel launchings, waterfront activities, yacht races, small boat voyages, shipbuilding, and wartime military activiities (chiefly during World War Two and the Korean War.) Documentary information was found in the form of typed or printed captions or newsclippings originally attached to the images. Emphasis is upon maritime activities of the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Coast.
