CORRESPONDENCE

Scope and Content of Series

Series 1) CORRESPONDENCE: Arranged alphabetically by correspondent, the series includes letters from Leo Szilard, Jonas Salk, Linus Pauling, Wilder Penfield, Carl Sagan, and Lewis Thomas. There is correspondence documenting Livingston's involvement with the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences, the Foundations' Fund for Research in Psychiatry, and the Institute for Policy Studies, of which he was a founding member. A very rich correspondence covers the period from 1947 to 1952, while Livingston was a member of the faculty of the Yale University School of Medicine and spent time in Europe receiving advanced training. Of particular interest are letters to Paul C. Smith, editor and general manager of the San Francisco Chronicle, that report on his interpretations of the climate and mood of post-war Europe.

PROJECTS

Scope and Content of Series

Series 5) PROJECTS: Arranged by project in three subseries: A) Brain Mapping Project, B) Committee for Undernourished People, and C) The Human Brain Film.
A) The Brain Mapping Project: Arranged alphabetically, the subseries consists largely of transcripts of a week-long meeting called the Task Definition Workshop, where Livingston and others met to sort out the tasks and goals for this new project. The transcripts are arranged chronologically. The subseries also contains data and digitized computer drawings of brain sections of monkeys, rats and other animals.
B) The Committee for Undernourished People: Includes research subject files, arranged alphabetically. Also includes correspondence with Vicky Newman, Newman's dietary analyses, and data on nutrition of pregnant women and mothers.
C) The Human Brain Film: Arranged alphabetically, this subseries contains correspondence pertaining to the film, funded by Hoffman-La Roche, Inc. Also includes draft scripts and license agreements for the film.

PROJECTS AND RESEARCH

Scope and Content of Series

Series 11) PROJECTS AND RESEARCH: Notes, drafts, correspondence, reports, proposals, research notebooks, photographs, drawings, and ephemera regarding Livingston's research projects. Arranged in five subseries: A) Capricorn Expedition, B) Brain Mapping Project, C) Committee for Undernourished People, D) The Human Brain Film, and E) Other Research.
A) Capricorn Expedition: Correspondence, notes, drafts, photographs and ephemera regarding the 1952 Scripps Institution of Oceanography Capricorn Expedition in the Pacific Ocean. Livingston served as ship's physician and as a diver for the expedition. The series includes Livingston's original materials on research diving, and a transcript of a meeting between Roger Revelle and other scientists on the expedition. Original sound recordings from the expedition may be found in the SOUND RECORDINGS series.
B) Brain Mapping Project: Correspondence, reports, proposals and research notebooks for the Laboratory for Quantitative Morphology's project to develop a prototype computer system to three-dimensionally map the human brain in microscopic detail.
C) Committee for Undernourished People (CUP): Correspondence, notes, proposals and reports for a research study on the effects of chronic undernutrition on the brain development of infants and children.
D) The Human Brain Film: Correspondence, notes, typescripts and award certificates for The Human Brain: A Dynamic View of its Structures and Organization (1976). This film documents the brain mapping research of Livingston's lab, in which human brains were very thinly sliced, stained, and filmed in sequence by a cinemicrotome. The images were then digitized to create three-dimensional images of the brain.
E) Other Research: Research notebooks, correspondence, reports, notes, photographs and drawings for other human and animal research conducted by Livingston. Includes research notebooks kept by members of the Institute for Information Systems, the UC San Diego Department of Neurosciences, and the Quantitative Morphology Laboratory working under Livingston. Arranged chronologically. One notebook containing personally identifiable medical information has been restricted – researchers must request access from the director of Special Collections and Archives.
