Abstract: Richard Emery Lingenfelter (1934- ) was a professor of geophysics and planetary physics at UCLA (1969-79), and the author of several books on western American history. The collection consists of Professor Lingenfelter's research notes, copies of articles, manuscripts and galley sheets of his various works on western American history including Death Valley & the Armagosa: a land of illusion, The hardrock miners: a history of the mining labor movement in the American West, 1863-1893, The newspapers of Nevada, 1858-1958: a history and bibliography, The Nonpareil press of T.S. Harris, Steamboats on the Colorado River, 1852-1916, and Songs of the American West.

Biography

Richard Emery Lingenfelter was born on April 5, 1934 in Farmington, New Mexico; AB, UCLA, 1956; became physicist at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, 1957-62; research geophysicist (1962-68) and professor of geophysics and planetary physics (1969-79), UCLA; affiliated with Center for Astrophysics, UC San Diego; author of several books on western American history, including The Nonpareil press of T.S. Harris (with Richard A. Dwyer, 1957), The newspapers of Nevada, 1858-1958 (1964), The songs of the American West (co-editor, 1968), The hardrock miners (1974), Steamboats on the Colorado River, 1852-1916 (1978).

Scope and Content

Collection consists of research notes, copies of articles, manuscripts and galley sheets of Professor Lingenfelter's various works on western American history. Includes Death Valley & the Armagosa: a land of illusion, The hardrock miners: a history of the mining labor movement in the American West, 1863-1893, The newspapers of Nevada, 1858-1958: a history and bibliography, The Nonpareil press of T.S.
