Some incoming correspondence has been grouped as follows: miscellaneous letters requesting aid in securing employment, references, etc. (2 folders); letters requesting information and maps, offering scientific objects for sale, expressing general interest in science, etc. (3 folders); letters offering information on various subjects - place names, shipwrecks, history, astronomy, geography, etc., and offering to give Davidson scientific objects (1 folder); letters requesting Davidson to lecture (1 folder); letters from consulates, legations and embassies relating to the Davidsons' trip around the world, 1875 (1 folder); letters and papers relating to the Paris Exposition, 1878, at which Davidson acted as chairman of the jury judging moving powers of machinery displayed there (1 folder); letters of condolence on the death of his son, George, 1900 (1 folder); letters from students and former students (1 folder).
box 59-63

Letters written by Davidson 1845-1911

Scope and Content Note

Primarily drafts of his outgoing letters. There are some original letters, however, for the earlier years, 1845-1871, written to members of his family and to his wife's family. The file is obviously incomplete since Davidson did not systematically save drafts or copies. Some of his incoming letters, however, bear notes indicating the nature of the replies.
Although there are copies or drafts of letters addressed to members of the Coast and Geodetic Survey in these files, most of the official correspondence was recorded in the letter books described below.
carton 1, box 66-69

Letterbooks, 33 volumes 1851-1895

Scope and Content Note

v. 1-32 contain drafts of letters written by Davidson to members of the Coast and Geodetic Survey, with occasional copies of letters written by the latter to Davidson. The last volume, v. 33, marked "Private: Special Letter Book of George Davidson," is a press copy letterbook, 1889-1895, containing personal, not professional, letters.
