Scope and Content
This collection of 27 photographic prints and one blueprint consists primarily of views related to the irrigation of California
mission land. The photographs were taken or collected by Frank Adams (1875-1967), a University of California, Berkeley professor
who specialized in irrigation. The collection includes photographs of tools and plows (some hand-made by Indians) dams, aqueducts,
reservoirs, cisterns, etc. Views of agricultural land depicting olive, pear and Bidwell orange trees are featured, as well
as several general views of missions (Purísima, San Luis Rey, Carmel, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Sonoma and San Antonio). Also
included is a photo of land farmed by Russians at Fort Ross, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's home in Sonoma, and a blueprint
of an old mission dam at Santa Barbara.
Several of the photographs have extensive type-written captions on the verso, and this is indicated in the caption list by
“more information on verso.”
