Description
Correspondence; copies of land records; survey field notes and tables; stock certificates, receipts; notes on road work, travel sheets, ticket boxes for wagon road companies.
Background
William Spencer Lowden was born in Windsor, Massachusetts, June 27, 1830. He was the son of Spencer Lowden and Mehitable White Bates. His family moved to Mt. Sterling, Illinois, where he was educated and trained as a carpenter. He came to Sacramento in 1849 and to Trinity County, California in 1850. In 1851 he settled on Lowden Ranch on the Trinity River near Lewiston.
