Biographical/Historical note
In 1951 Fuller coined the phrase "Spaceship Earth" - a means of defining the earth not only as an interdependent whole, but
also as a functioning machine whose parts could be tweaked and modified. The World Game orginated as Fuller's attempt to prove
that with thoughtful leadership the world's resources could not only be preserved for future generations, but also better
employed in the services of humanity. The idea originated with Fuller's orginal proposal to the United States Information
Agency for the 1967 Montreal World's Fair. While the USIA embraced Fuller and Shoji Sadao's design for the Expo '67 dome,
it rejected his plans for an exhibit that would allow players to hypothetically allocate the world's resources with the goal
of feeding and clothing the world. Not easily deterred, Fuller worked with notables like Edwin Schlossberg to develop the
World Game and in 1969 it was launched at New York's Studio School of Painting and Sculpture.

and a selection of papers documenting the early development of the World Game.

Biographical/Historical note
Throughout his career Fuller maintained an ambivalent relationship with the academy. He boasted of being "fired" from Harvard
and criticized the modern education system for its insistence on specialization. However, he also accepted honorary degrees
from many colleges and universities and his lecture circuit included frequent stops at educational institutions. He held teaching
appointments at Black Mountain College (1947-1948), Institute of Design, Chicago (1949), University of Illinois (1949), North
Carolina State (1949), Southern Illinois University (1959), Harvard University (1961), the University City Science Center,
Philadelphia (1972) and others. Thru his affiliation with colleges and universities Fuller attracted students who would later
become his closest colleagues, including T.C. Howard, James Fitzgibbon, Don Richter, Kenneth Snelson, Jeffrey Lindsay, Shoji
Sadao, Duncan Stewart and Thomas Zung.

Scope and Contents note
The contents of this series include papers sent from Fuller's Carbondale office to E.J. Applewhite in Washington, D.C. when
he began collaborating on Synergetics in 1969. Originally housed in two G.I. trunks labeled G 1009 and G 1010, they date from
the period following Fuller's stay in Wichita, Kansas (1944-1947) and include documentation of Fuller's early thought on fundamental
structures, including his formulation of the A and B Quanta Modules. It also contains a bound notebook called Massachusetts
Institute of Technology Computation Book: Energetic Geometry and Experimental Structures and correspondence with Duncan Stewart
(North Carolina State Dept. of Design). Oversized drawings kept in this notebook have been removed for housing in a map case
and must be paged separately.

Biographical/Historical note
Greek city planner and founder of the World Society for Ekistics (1964) Constantine Doxiadis initiated a series of meetings
called the Delos Symposia in 1963. The symposia sought to address the problems of world population growth, housing and settlement
and attracted prominent intellectuals like historian Arnold Toynbee and anthropologist Margaret Mead.

Although the U.S. Patent Office awarded a patent to Fuller's Dymaxion Map in 1946, the records in this subseries relate to
Fuller's interest in computer-based mapping systems and date from the mid 1970s. A significant portion of these records, Subsubseries
1. contains papers delivered by a wide range of professionals at Harvard University's Computer Graphics Week, a symposium
hosted by the Graduate School of Design during the week of July 23 - July 28, 1978. Subsubseries 2. consists mainly of reports
also relating to computer mapping systems, while Subsubseries 3. contains a file maintained by office staff that includes
notes and U.S. Dept. of Defense maps used for compiling a Dymaxion Map Directory. (No copy of the directory exists in this

Biographical/Historical note
Fuller championed experiential learning. In many respects, his years in the U.S. Navy contributed to his later thought more
so than his stints at Harvard University. He felt that the navy demanded a blend of knowledge and manual ability along with
a sense of urgency in the name of survival -all themes that would find their way into his books, like
Utopia or Oblivion or projects like the World Game. A tireless teacher, Fuller often relied upon models to illustrate everything from his synergetic
geometry to his Dymaxion Map in workshops and seminars.

There are two areas of minor deformation; surface dust and dirt overall; some preferential corrosion (forming in lines rather
than “blobs” – i.e. from brush marks). This item was most likely damaged during its packing.

Biographical/Historical note
R. Buckminster Fuller's (1898-1983) designs -particularly the geodesic dome- gave shape to a generation's longings for ultra-modern,
futuristic shelter. Fuller was never, however, a great commercial success. Even while the geodesic dome became a mainstay
at global expositions of American modernity, they never became a part of the American vernacular landscape.He started Fuller
Houses, Inc. in Washington in the spring of 1944. The company relocated to Wichita, Kansas in order to collaborate with Beech
Aircraft Co, who, because of its favorable standing with the labor movement, appealed to Fuller. Beech Vice President and
General Manager Jack Gaty was enthusiastic about a post-war production shift from warplanes to prefabricated housing. Under
the contract between the two enterprises, Beech received a two-year option on stock and first refusal rights on manufacturing
while Fuller Houses, Inc. got Beech materials and labor at a cost and the use of plant machinery. A prototype of the Wichita
Dymaxion Dwelling Machine was completed between 1944 and 1947, but a dispute with Beech over the costs of tooling left Fuller
Houses, Inc. incapable of financing the marketing and mass production of the house. Soured, Fuller determined not to establish
a business with money-making as its sole purpose.1955 saw the incorporation of Synergetics, Inc. (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
and Geodesics, Inc. (Raleigh, North Carolina). Four years later, in 1969, the Tetrahelix Corporation (Hamilton, Ohio) was
formed. Fuller served in an administrative capacity for each of these companies -President of Synergetics, Inc. and Geodesics,
Inc. and Chairman of the Board of the Tetrahelix Corporation.

Biographical/Historical note
Architect Shoji Sadao studied with Fuller at Cornell University in the mid-1950s and, in 1964, they formed the firm Fuller
and Sadao, P.C., whose first major project was the geodesic dome at Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada.
Scope and Contents note
Made famous by Fuller's Geodesic Domes, the term "geodesic" traces its roots to the "geodesy" -the branch of geology that
studies the shape of the earth and the exact positioning of points on the earth. Geodesic architecture developed out of Fuller's
research into geodesy and the subsequent development of his Dymaxion Map projection. The records in this series relate to
the application of geodesics to a wide variety of architectural projects undertaken by Fuller, his licensees and others from
the late 1950s thru the early 1970s. They were maintained separately by Sadao.
