Subsubseries 3. John McHale Reprints

Physical Description: 1 linear ft.

Biography/Organization History

British artist John McHale (1922-1978) was a founding member of the Independent Group of London, a cadre of students centered at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, during the early 1950s. In 1955 he wrote a letter to R. Buckminster Fuller inquiring as to the degree of influence the Bauhaus had on Fuller's work. Fuller's answer, a resounding "no" accompanied by an autobiographical essay, inspired McHale to invite Fuller to deliver a speech to the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1958. As a result of his relationship with McHale, Fuller published in a wide array of British arts and architecture journals in during the 1960s. In that same decade McHale would collaborate with Fuller on the World Design Science Decade and Geoscope projects. This series contains McHale's file of reprinted pieces relating to his work with Fuller.

Series 12. R. Buckminster Fuller Photographic Exhibit

Biography/Organization History

Between 1964 and 1969 Fuller's office staff maintained two separate photographic exhibits for loan to institutions interested in Fuller's life and work. .

Scope and Content Note

Exhibit A contains 118 photographs, charts and drawings mounted on linen board. Exhibit B contains 274 of the more than 330 cardboard panels that originally comprised the exhibit. Each of the cardboard mounted panels in Exhibit B was assigned a unique number and is keyed to the corresponding LECO code number.

Physical Description: ca. 12 linear ft.

Biography/Organization History

The Buckminster Fuller Institute maintained 118 black and white, linen-mounted photographic panels. The panels range in scope from Fuller's "4D" period in the 1920s, when many of his ideas had their genesis, to the energetic-synergetic geometry most fully articulated in his later years. Among the inventions covered in the exhibit are: the Dymaxion House, Dymaxion Bathroom, Dymaxion Transport, Dymaxion Deployment Unit, Dymaxion Map Projection and Dymaxion Dwelling Machine. A set of panels show the myriad climatic conditions under which geodesic domes have been built.

Scope and Content Note

Boxes 1 thru 8 contain a nearly complete run of 118 panels. Box 9 contains panels from the exhibit that were not assigned unique numbers and a handful of photographic panels that were added to the exhibit later.

Scope and Content Note

Nearly all of Buckminster Fuller's work has been copiously documented in photographs. The prime photographs have been placed in the LECO Index (after the LECO Photo Service of Flushing, Long Island, New York, which Fuller used for over 20 years to reproduce his photographic images).

Arrangement

The Leco Index is a geographically based filing system. Entries are formatted as follows: W-2-00. In this example, "W-2-00" designates the location for all photographs of the Dymaxion Dwelling Machine. The initial letter, in this case "W" for "Wichita", indicates where it was manufactured. The "2" signifies that the Dymaxion Dwelling Machine is the second entry under the letter "W". The last two places indicate individual photographs within the particular grouping of images.
