Biography / Administrative Information
One of the most important postwar British composers, Peter Racine Fricker was born in London in 1920 and was educated at London's
St. Paul's School. In 1937 he entered the Royal College of Music where he studied theory with Reginald Morris and organ with
Sir Ernest Bullock. He also studied at Morley College, where he met Michael Tippett. He left to serve in the Royal Air Force
during WWII and after the war he returned to Morley College where he studied with Matyas Seiber until Seiber's death in 1960.
In 1952 he succeeded Tippett as director of the college and in 1955 began teaching composition at the Royal College. In 1964
he accepted a one-year appointment to teach composition at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He accepted a full
time appointment the following year and in 1970 became chairperson of the music department. He held a joint appointment in
the Department of Music and the College of Creative Studies and taught composition, theory (particularly 20th century), and
musicianship at UCSB until his retirement in 1989. He was also Composer-in-Residence for the Santa Barbara Symphony. His compositions
won many awards, including the Koussevitzky Prize for his First Symphony in 1949. He was awarded the annual Faculty Research
Lecturer award by the University in 1980 and was the first professor appointed to the Dorothy and Sherrill C. Corwin Chair
in Music.
Fricker's works owed much to Bartok, Berg, Hindemith and Schoenberg and though his works are rarely serial, they are often
freely atonal. His output was large numbering about 200 works, including seven film scores, five symphonies as well as numerous
chamber, choral, and organ works.
He died in Santa Barbara in 1990.

Scores (Manuscripts and Published Music)
Scope and Content Note
Series II, Scoresconsists of published scores from Fricker's personal collection, his manuscripts, diazo scores and parts (and sometimes the
original vellum transparencies), sketches, sketch scores and notes. Many of the scores, both published and diazo are labeled
"master score" and have his notes, edits and corrections. Other scores were used in performance and are annotated, but not
necessarily by him. Fricker was a methodical composer and saved many of the sketches and drafts to his music. Fricker kept
a black notebook listing his works, which was later typed into a works list. He gave each composition a number based on its
date of composition which is called "F No" in this finding aid. The organization of the scores in this finding aid is based
on Fricker's arrangement in his works list. The works list can be used as a reference for more detailed information about
each composition, including the forces, the date of first performance, first broadcast performance, performers in the first
performance. This works list is available on the web at:
http://www.library.ucsb.edu/speccoll/pa/pamss17c.html. For each composition, items are listed in the following order: published scores, Mss full score, vellum full score, diazo
full score, reductions Mss, reductions vellum, reductions diazo, parts Mss, parts vellum, parts diazo, sketches, notes and
other related materials. Diazo scores have been segregated to keep them from contaminating other materials.

(*F No is the number assigned to the composition by the composer - see works list for dates, forces and first performance
information on each piece)

UCSB Files
Scope and Content Note
Series IV, UCSB onsists of administrative files, lecture notes, research files and students' compositions arising from his teaching activities
at UCSB from 1964 to 1990. The administrative files includes correspondence and other materials relating to his positions
in the Music Department and the College of Creative Studies, including the establishment of the DMA program, faculty correspondence,
faculty meeting minutes, curriculum committee files, Ph.D. exam questions and correspondence with students. The administrative
and faculty correspondence is a very small series as most of his personal correspondence has not yet come to UCSB. Also, included
is correspondence with individuals relating to UCSB events such as guest performances. Biographical information in this series
is in both the bio-bibliographies that Fricker had to submit to the University for promotion and the clippings file kept on
each faculty member in the music department. Included in the bio-bibliographies are lists Fricker compiled each year listing
new compositions, articles and performances. The faculty archive is primarily newspaper clippings, articles about Fricker
and programs from concerts where his works were performed. Lecture Notes are the files that Fricker kept for each course he
taught while at UCSB. He often prepared lengthy lecture notes with musical analysis for each course. It appears that he would
use notes for the same class in multiple years so not every folder for a particular course number has extensive notes. There
are also copies of exams, handouts and musical analysis (particularly tone rows) of pieces he was teaching. The research files
are the notes he kept on various composers that he was interested in or taught in his classes. Included in the files is musical
analysis and notes that he probably used in preparing his courses and lectures. Lastly are the scores of student compositions
that he kept. Permission of the student must be secured before photocopying his student's scores.

Correspondence
Scope and Content Note
Series V, Correspondencecontains personal and professional correspondence in three subseries: Alphabetical, Student and Chronological. The Alphabetical
Correspondence subseries is the largest of these and contains folders on those individuals, companies and organizations with
whom Fricker regularly corresponded. Frequently, copies of Frickers replies are included in these files. Significant correspondents
include: Wendy Lingard, Helen Fricker (his wife), Deborah Alice Fricker (his mother), Basil Ramsey, Alexander Goehr, Iain
Hamilton, Anthony Milner, Humphrey and Fiona Searle, The Composers Guild of Great Britain, The Performing Right Society, and
Schott and Co. (his principal music publisher). The Student Correspondence subseries consists of sporadic correspondence between
Fricker and his students. Often exchanges concern developing compositions and upcoming concerts. The Chronological Correspondence
subseries contains what Fricker called One-shot correspondence, that is exchanges that were limited, professional, or trivial
in nature and with correspondents for whom he did not keep a separate folder. A few personal letters are also present in this
subseries, particularly from the earlier dates.
