Background
The restoration of the California State Capitol began in 1972 as the result of an
engineering study by the Office of the State Architect which indicated that the west wing
was unsafe in the event of a moderate earthquake. The project began in March 1976
involving more than 2,000 workers. It took six years to complete at a cost of $67.8
million.
