Series 1: Translations. 1960-1968.

Scope and Content

Series one contains copies of Carlos Fuentes’ A Change of Skin, The Death of Artemio Cruz, El Sueño, Where the Air is Clear, and Christopher Columbus. The works are in Spanish. For each work there are also, either full translations in English, or translation notes. This series’ focus is on Sam Hileman’s translation rough drafts and translation notes. It contains a great deal of marginalia by Hileman and occasional notes by Fuentes.

Arrangement

Series one is arranged so that the materials are grouped by subseries and then by alphabetical title and then by date, where possible, within those title subsections.

Subseries 1.1: Translation Roughs. 1960-1967.

Scope and Content

Subseries 1.1 contains copies of Carlos Fuentes’ A Change of Skin, The Death of Artemio Cruz, El Sueño, Where the Air is Clear. These titles are in mixed Spanish and English; they exemplify Hileman’s translation process and the working-process between Hileman and Fuentes. Hileman’s marginalia about the translations occur throughout the titles. This subseries contains only typewritten pages. Of note this subseries contains three proof-plates of A Change of Skin, with Hileman’s and Fuentes’ notes on their respective copies.

Subseries 1.2: Translation Notes. 1960-1968.

Scope and Content

Subseries 1.2 contains Hileman’s translation notes for two untitled works and Where the Air is Clear, and Christopher Columbus Extracts. The translation notes are all handwritten and Hileman annotated many of the pages.

Series 2: Correspondence. 1959-1967.

Scope and Content

Series two contains Sam Hileman’s correspondence with Carlos Fuentes, as well as his publishing contacts. The letters focus on Hileman’s translation work for Fuentes with occasional mention of Hileman’s and Fuentes’s relationship. The letters span 1959-1967.

Arrangement

The letters are arranged by correspondent and then by date within that sub group.

Series 3: Newspaper reviews of Fuentes' work. 1960-1968.

Scope and Content

Series three contains newspaper reviews of Carlos Fuentes’ novels. The reviews, typically, are from American newspapers with the occasional Spanish language newspaper review. The reviews show some signs of annotation by Hileman.

Arrangement

The reviews are arranged within two groupings, miscellaneous and A Change of Skin; the reviews are then arranged chronologically.

Series 4: Spanish language editions of Carlos Fuentes novels. 1959-1962.

Scope and Content

Series four contains the Spanish language publications of Carlos Fuentes’ Las Buenas Conciencias, from 1959, and La Muerte de Artemio Cruz, from 1962.
