Description
This collection contains correspondence, documents and other material from Eloise Emerson, an accomplished public health nurse who worked for the Riverside County Department of Health. The majority of materials in the collection focus on her nursing career, and her lobbying effort against the California State mandatory retirement age.
Background
Eloise Emerson was born on December 14, 1910 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She moved to Long Beach, California sometime after that, graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1928. Emerson then entered nursing school, and trained at Seaside Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, where she was working when a devastating earthquake hit the city in 1933.
