Arcadia history collection. Consult library. Arcadia Public Library, Arcadia, CA 91006.
The photographs were collected by the Arcadia Public Library, the Arcadia Historical Museum, and others.
The 200 photos chosen for inclusion in the California Digital Library reflect some of the unique and varied history of the City of Arcadia and the surrounding area, including the Pony Express Museum; Ross Field, a U. S. Army balloon school during World War I; Rose parade floats sponsored by the Arcadia Tournament of Roses Association; and representative people, places, and events from Arcadia's past.
The photographs were assembled from collections in the Arcadia Public Library and Arcadia Historical Museum. They were digitized in order to provide broader access to the collections by the public. Additional materials are being digitized and made available on the Arcadia Public Library's website.
Project activities included selecting photographs from the Library and Museum collections and performing research as necessary to provide photo documentation. Photographs were catalogued by the Technical Services Staff and the records entered into CONTENTdm by the Reference Staff.
The project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), which is supported in whole or part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
The history of the City of Arcadia is documented from its incorporation in 1903 to the present and includes maps and information on city government and local businesses, places, people, and events.
Significant holdings include Arcadia Tournament of Roses float photographs and Rose Parade programs; a collection of watercolors by Edna Lenz and Justine Wishek which depict the history of the San Gabriel Valley; photographs of the Santa Anita Assembly Center for the Japanese; U.S. Army Balloon School papers; scrapbooks and photographs of the Pony Express Museum; and a collection of books written by Arcadia authors.
Other print and non-print materials focus on Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, the Arboretum of Los Angeles County, and Santa Anita Racetrack.
