    Historical or Biographical Note

Biography: David Dorward is presumed to be an owner of a coconut oil company in the 1930s. It is possible that Captain Sievers was given a copy of Dorward's typescript after meeting him on one of the ships Dorward sailed on during his trip around the world in 1937.
Henrik Edwards Sievers (1911-1999) was born in Marin County and raised in Pacific Grove, Vallejo and San Jose California. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1928 and attended San Jose State College starting 1929. An active seaman from 1930 to 1975, Mr. Sievers gained Master status in 1943 while working for the Alaska Transportation Company. Early in his career he sailed with the Dollar Steamship Line and Standard Oil Company of California, and later with the Alaska Transportation Company and American President Lines. After retirement in the mid-1970s, he remained active in maritime affairs spending time consulting, lecturing and traveling. He was a member of Master Mates and Pilots, Master Mariners, Maritime Veterans Commonwealth, Navy Reserve and Maritime Historic Association. No memorial, the Captain's wish. Arrangements by the Neptune Society of Northern California, San Francisco Office.
