Historical Background
Joan Ariel played a vital role in the development of the UC Irvine Women's Studies program. In addition to serving as the
Women's Studies librarian for nearly twenty years, she served on the Women's Studies Steering Committee, as a Women's Studies
course instructor, and as the academic coordinator for Women's Studies. Ariel participated in numerous campus groups and organizations
that supported women's issues. She also contributed to the establishment of the many gay and lesbian groups that remain active
on the UC Irvine Campus including the Lilac Collective and the Gay and Lesbian Faculty and Staff Network.
Ariel excelled as a women's studies librarian, contributing considerably to the field of women's studies librarianship. She
was an active member of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and in 1983 she helped form the ACRL Women's
Studies Discussion Group. In 1987 Ariel published her book
Building Women's Studies Collections: A Resource Guide. That same year the ACRL discussion group that Ariel helped establish became the ACRL Women's Studies Section. In 2002 Ariel
received the ACRL Women's Studies Section Achievement Award for significant achievements and contributions to the field of
academic women's studies librarianship. She ended her career at the University of California in 2006 as the shared print planning
manager for UC system wide library planning in the Office of the President. At the time of her retirement she planned to continue
working as the part-time library director at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
