    Scope and Contents

    The Howard Hollman Newspaper Collection (1965-2000) documents the Chicano Movement and Hollman's activism in San Diego. Of particular interest are local newspapers such as La Verdad, La Raza, Inside the Beast, and Good Morning Teaspoon. The majority of the material dates from 1965-1975 and focuses primarily on the issues Chicanos faced during the movement. Filed alphabetically by publication title, the collection includes newspapers, newsprint, and magazines.

    Biographical Note

    Howard Hollman was born in 1941 and raised in San Diego. He was a member of Los Chicanos, a social group based in Logan Heights. After serving in the Air Force he attended San Diego Mesa College and SDSU where he majored in Public Administration and Chicana and Chicano Studies, both on the G.I. Bill. While in college, he worked as a peer counselor for the Educational Opportunity Program and advocated for farm worker's rights. In 1968, Hollman became an active member of the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) and shortly after joined the Committee on Chicano Rights (CCR). He was co-founder of the Union del Barrio in 1982, and has collaborated with the Logan Heights Car Club Council. Hollman is currently a member of the Chicano Park Steering Committee and the Save our Centro Coalition, an initiative to re-establish the Centro Cultural de La Raza.
