Background
The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Office was founded in 1963 as the Health and Safety Office. It was renamed Environmental
Health and Safety in 1965. EH&S is responsible for ensuring the overall safety of the campus, including clean-up and removal
of hazardous waste, fire safety, food safety, disaster preparedness, occupational health, and ergonomics and health inspections.
The director of EH&S has authority to negotiate and execute environmental, health, and safety permits and licenses, as well
as general compliance certifications. The office reports to the UCI Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Business Services.
