Scope and content:

The collection consists of 1 (8 x 10 in.) photographic print of the steamer BEAVER, in 1870.

Hand-written on the back of the print is: "S.S. Beaver, 1870. Came to Victoria in 1839 around the Horn from England." The back of the print is also stamped "Archives of British Columbia."

Biographical / historical:

Historical Note
The steamer BEAVER was built in 1835 in London by Green, Wigrams & Green, for the Hudson's Bay Company. After sailing around Cape Horn as a Brigantine, she was refitted as a steamship at Fort Vancouver, and became the first steamship on the west coast of North America in 1836.

BEAVER worked chiefly in the Gulf of Georgia and Puget Sound, and her home port was moved from Fort Vancouver to Fort Victoria (now Victoria) on Vancouver Island in 1846. In 1853, she was relegated to passenger and cargo work.

She was laid up from 1860 to 1862, and was chartered by the Royal Navy for survey work along the coasts of Vancouver Island and British Columbia from 1863 to 1870. In 1874, she was sold to the British Columbia Towing and Transportation Company. BEAVER towed barges, log booms and sailing vessels lying off Cape Flaherty until February 1883, when she went aground off Burrard Inlet. She was sold several times, but not put back in service until 1888. On July 25, 1888, she ran aground on Prospect Point in the Burrard Inlet in Vancouver. She was gradually stripped of her machinery, and the hull eventually sank. The site of the wreck was mapped by the Underwater Archeology Society of British Columbia in the 1990s.

Custodial history:

Accession No. SAFR-1 was transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park from Golden Gate National Recreation Area which acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service. While the photographer is unknown the print was most likely acquired by the San Francisco Maritime Museum from the Archives of British Columbia.
