Abstract: Horace Winchell Magoun (1907- ) was a professor and chairman of the department of anatomy (1950-55), then professor and dean
of the graduate division of the UCLA School of Medicine beginning in 1962. The collection consists of Magoun's papers, published
articles, comments at professional conferences, letters, and files.

Magoun was born on June 23, 1907 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; BS, Rhode Island State College, 1929; MS, Syracuse University,
1931; Ph.D, Northwestern University Medical School, 1934, D.Sc, Northwestern University, 1959; D.Sc., University of Rhode
Island, 1960; H.H.D., Wayne State University, 1965; instructor Institute of Neurology (1934-37), assistant professor (1937-40),
associate professor (1940-43), and professor of microanatomy (1943-50), Northwestern University; Rockefeller Fellow, Johns
Hopkins Medical School, 1939-40; professor and chairman of the department of anatomy (1950-55), then professor and dean of
the graduate division of the UCLA School of Medicine beginning in 1962; winner of the Passano award of the American Medical
Association, 1963; member of the American Academy of Neurology; published works include
The waking brain (1958) and
The historical development of physiological thought (1959).
Collection consists of papers, published articles, comments at professional conferences, letters, and files of Horace Magoun,
dean of the graduate division, UCLA School of Medicine. Includes files on quality of graduate education and faculty organization,
various papers and articles on science research, and reports on U.S. graduate schools. Includes Magoun's paper, “A survey
of graduate education in engineering in the United States, California, and UCLA,” and a copy of his journal article, “The
Cartter report on quality in graduate education.”
