Scope and Content Note

Contains the individual and shared files of Alfred E. Heller and Samuel E. Wood, founder and co-founder of California Tomorrow. Includes incoming and outgoing correspondence as well as organizational and administrative material related to California Tomorrow's goals and plans, fundraising efforts, finances and budgets. The individual files of Heller and Wood each include material regarding the California Tomorrow Advisory Board and Board of Directors as well as documentation of their participation in seminars and conferences.

Scope and Content Note

Heller's outgoing correspondence from 1961-1964 documents his efforts to spark interest in California Tomorrow amongst his wide circle of acquaintances and friends. Incoming correspondence, particularly following the debut of the quarterly Cry California in 1965, is extremely supportive and includes expression of interest from Shirley Temple Black, Arizona Senator Sandra D. O'Connor, and Ansel Adams. Heller also corresponded with policy makers, government officials and representatives of conservation organizations and educational institutions, and received many requests for interviews and public appearances. Contains one folder of personal correspondence as well as a folder of correspondence handled by William Bronson in Heller's absence. Correspondence on behalf of Alfred Heller was also handled by John W. Abbott, executive secretary, particularly after 1971 (subseries 2.2.2).

Scope and Content Note

After the "One State" conference sponsored by California Tomorrow on October 2, 1967, Heller began making more frequent public appearances. He emphasized the urgency of a comprehensive planning process to groups ranging from the Junior League to professional planners, land use and conservation advocates, and also addressed college classes as well, particularly in association with the emerging ecology curriculum. Contains separate files for each speech, including the text if available, and other related materials.

Files also contain requests for permission to reproduce Cry California articles. A miscellaneous file for each quarterly issue contains a copy of the publication as well as any material related to the regular features in each issue. Also includes editorial material for California Tomorrow publications, such as The Federal Threats to the California Landscape, that were reproduced as special issues of Cry California.

Scope and Content Note

California Tomorrow held one-day seminars in San Francisco in 1967 and 1969, and sponsored the Fourth Biennial Statewide Planning Conference in 1973, also in San Francisco. Other conferences, including the Workshop on Regional Government, were held in Southern California, and the town hall meetings were statewide. Files contain planning notes, correspondence, background and publicity materials, and may include photographs and slides, remarks by speakers and comments by attendees.

This one-day seminar was held on February 18, 1969 at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco to focus on issues associated with the state planning program and specifically the State Development Plan. Due to the large number of people interested in attending, the venue was changed from the St. Francis Yacht Club to the Sheraton Palace Hotel. Speakers and panelists included Caspar Weinberger, Samuel Cullers, T.J. Kent, Jr., Assemblyman Willie Brown, Jr., Mrs. Morse Erskine, and Professor Henry Fagin. Contains material from the initial planning stages to follow-up correspondence and thank you letters.

6.1.3:  Statewide Planning Conference, 1973

Scope and Content Note

Contains material related to the Fourth Biennial Statewide Planning Conference, held at the Hilton Hotel in San Francisco, April 24-25, 1973. All California Tomorrow members were invited to attend, and the conference was open to the general public. The roster of panel chairmen included Assemblyman Willie L. Brown, Jr.; Michael McCloskey of the Sierra Club; Dr. Lester Lees of the California Institute of Technology; Huey D. Johnson of the Trust for Public Land; and Pete Wilson, Mayor of San Diego. Other notable participants included Senator Alan Cranston, Per-Olof Hanson from the Stockholm planning council, and Dean Harvey S. Perloff of the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Members of the California Coastal Zone Conservation Commission (established in 1972) and the Bureau of Land Management desert study program led discussions in their respective areas; air pollution, particularly in the Los Angeles Basin, was the focus of another panel. Session topics included the role of the courts in environmental decision-making and the function of citizen action groups. The social and economic context of environmental improvement was also included. John W. Abbott presided over the closing program of the conference, which was titled Do the Pieces Fit?
Contains photographs of speakers as well as full transcripts of many speeches and remarks, including a message from Governor Ronald Reagan, delivered by Norman B. Livermore, Jr.

Alfred Heller also attended the United Nations Conference on the Environment, held in Stockholm from June 5-12, 1972 (see report in Audubon Society meeting of October 12, 1972).
