Abstract: A petition to Spanish Governor Diego de Borica in Monterey, from Jose Antonio Buelna in San Jose, dated July 2, 1797, asking
the governor to restore lands owned by Pedro Romero to his widow, whose name is assumed to be Mercedad. In the petition, Buelna
acknowledges the concern that Romero’s son, Varon, is too young to manage the land, and anticipates that others will try to
involve themselves in the matter. A notation at the left is a reply by Diego de Borica granting Mercedad the ability to act
as overseer of the land and for her and her son to convert it or sell it as they see fit. The folder also contains a transcription
in Spanish and an English translation of the document.
