Abstract: This folder contains three newspaper obituaries, a sympathy thanks card from Mrs. Coleman regarding her husband's death, a recollection of an incident between Coleman and Ned McGoward dictated by J. F. Bourke to E. M. Kline on May 2, 1927, three letters of correspondence and memos regarding the Society of California Pioneers, and one letter of correspondence to J. B. Hoyd.

Biographical/Historical note

b. 02/29/1824; d. 11/22/1893. Coleman was born in Harrison County, Kentucky and was raised in VIrginia. He graduated from St. Louis University at 20 and took courses in the commercial department. After spending some time in New Orleans he headed west to Sutter's Fort. He quickly abandoned mining for commercial business, setting up shop in San Francisco in 1851. In 1852 he married Carrie Page of St. Louis and had two sons. He was part of a vigilante squad in SF that expelled criminals from the state. He also helped surpress the Draft Riots in New york City and the San Lot mobs in 1877-1878.
